What Is Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing method used by carriers to account for package size, not just actual weight. Large, lightweight packages cost more to ship because they take up cargo space. Understanding DIM weight is essential for accurate freight quoting.

The DIM Weight Formula

DIM Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM Factor

The DIM factor varies by carrier and mode:

  • Air freight (IATA): DIM factor = 6,000 (cm) or 166 (inches)
  • Sea freight: DIM factor = 1,000,000 (cm³ per metric ton)
  • Express carriers (UPS/FedEx): DIM factor = 5,000 (cm) or 139 (inches)

Example Calculation

A package measuring 60cm × 40cm × 30cm with actual weight of 5kg:

  • Volume: 60 × 40 × 30 = 72,000 cm³
  • DIM weight (air): 72,000 ÷ 6,000 = 12 kg
  • Chargeable weight: max(actual, DIM) = 12 kg

The shipper pays for 12 kg, not 5 kg. This is why accurate dimensional measurement matters — underestimating dimensions leads to billing disputes and revenue loss.

Why Manual Measurement Fails

  • Human measurement errors of 1-2cm on each dimension compound: a 2cm error on all three dimensions of the package above changes DIM weight by 15%
  • Inconsistent measurement points (do you measure at the widest point or the base?)
  • Time-consuming: measuring with a tape measure takes 30-60 seconds per package
  • No audit trail: manual measurements are not verifiable after the fact

How AI Automation Solves This

AI dimensional calculation captures exact measurements from photos:

  • Consistent measurement methodology every time
  • Photo evidence for audit purposes
  • Automatic DIM weight calculation across carrier formulas
  • Immediate integration with quoting systems
